Science, College, Life! FIG Instructor and Assistant

FIG Instructor: Michael Kellman

Hello everyone!  I'm Michael Kellman, a professor who works at the interface of chemistry and physics – physical chemistry.  In recent years I've become very interested in the challenges facing a student embarking on a career and life based in science.  I'm inspired further by the challenges we have all faced from Covid.  I would like to help people starting out to get on track in making their way in the world!

My scientific interests in recent years have focused on two very different areas:  (1) mysteries of quantum mechanics – Einstein's famous "spooky action at a distance" and Schrodinger's infamous Cat – and (2) molecular modelling of Alzheimer's disease, in the interest of aiding prevention and treatment of this tragedy.

I'm very interested in music, hiking and anything to do with the natural world.  I'm also interested the wider meanings of science, and the interface of science, society, industry, and the economy.  A recent interest is AI and what its human ramifications will be.

My professional background:  UC Berkeley B.S.; University of Chicago Ph.D.; postdoctoral work at UO and Columbia.  I was a professor for 8 years in Boston before moving to UO.
